Kindergarten Valentine's Day Activity

Valentine's Day is such a fun time in Kindergarten! Students love making and delivering cards with sweet messages to their family and friends (and of course they love receiving them as well). I love that Valentine's Day is a great opportunity for talking with students about being caring and kind! We always introduce the holiday by making a  class list of kind things we can do for those that we care about, as well as a list of kind words we can say to others!

In February, we are practicing sight word recognition heavily in our classroom. Students are becoming great readers and it is important that they practice reading sentences with sight words often  in order to build their fluency. I paired sight word sentences with fun black and white clip art from Whimsy Clips to create these read and color worksheets! We use these read and color activities for morning work, small group time or center time. I have students read the sentences to themselves, to their friends and to me after coloring the Valentine's Day images! We always make sure that we use our "butter" (yellow crayons) to butter up our popcorn words. We call our sight words popcorn words because they are always "popping" up when we are reading and also because they need to "pop" out of our mouths (we can't always sound them out).
